The Name Game
Orihime is inspired by the classic tale of Tanabata. In this tale, the star crossed lovers Hikoboshi, a cow herder, and Orihime, a princess, daughter of the god of the heavens, and seamstress, met and fell in love. They were so in love that Orihime stopped her duty of weaving, and Hikoboshi let his cows wander the heavens. Orihime's father became enraged and forbid the two lovers from being together. But after Orihime's pleading, the two were allowed to meet for one night out of the year, the 7th day of the 7th month, called Tanabata. They meet by walking across the milky way, crossing the heavens to reunite each year. The two lovers are represented in the skies by the stars Vega and Altair.
The festival is a minor festival, originating in China, but is still celebrated mainly by children in Japan today. Festival decorations of bamboo trees decorated with paper strips, on which wishes are written, are common. [1]
