Various Lore

Here you can find a compilation of various bits and pieces of the Lore of North of North that may not fit into other pages here, or larger stories. These tidbits come from various cards, Bella Sara Adventures, and the book series.

Notable Figures

  • There are many other Valkyries, not just Sigga, Tyri, and Emma Roland. However, these other Valkyries are present in other worlds, not North of North. But, they are still immortal women who ride flying horses and inspire heroes, no matter what world they may be in.[2]
  • Bella and Sara are both able to turn wolves into cubs to protect the people and horses from Ivenna's armies.[3]
  • Emma is first alerted of the path to find Herd Sunflower when Sigga's jewelry box shoots a rainbow into the sky, pointing the way.[4]
  • Emma wrote a wassail for Winter Festival: "When night is the longest / Our friendship is strongest / The darkness can't conquer our love and good cheer. / Hooray! Hooree! / And merry we'll be. / Three cheers to your health and to Midwinter's Eve! [5]
  • Ivenna the Wolf Rider keeps a fairy queen trapped in an enchanted snowglobe. She uses the fairy's magic to spy on Emma and that is how she learns that Emma is looking for the Moonstone.[6]
  • The Orange Fairy Queen's name is Nissa.[6]
  • Ivenna revealed at Bella's Ball that there are many more active wolf riders in North of North as of Emma's return.[7]
  • Jewel is able to summon a boat called the Island Jewel which is captained by a talking Raven, and powered by water horses.[8]
  • The three sisters Moonfairy, Sunflower, and Starlight gave up their magical herd pendants until a new Valkyrie could come and protect their herds from the wolfriders. This is why the herds remained lost until Emma came to North of North.[9]
  • Cade Traveler also has magical friend of his own an ambassador hound named Noble and according to Deru, they aren't related to wolves.[10]

Places

  • Sunnivir, a magical tree, grows in the center of the garden ballroom and was taken as a sapling from its mother tree in the Jasmine forest.[11]
  • The Shadow path is a haunted road made of dark magic that you cannot travel with your eyes open. Instead, only the strongest can travel through if they keep their eyes close. Should they make the mistake of opening them, they will get lost in madness and never return.[3]
  • According to Tyri, the shadow path is guarded by the deceased members of the wolf pack.[12]

Things

  • There are an equivalent to photographs in North of North, and they are often used for various newspapers. It is revealed these are actually portraits painted by Pixxles.[13]
  • A starstone can be used to communicate with animals, and are kept safe by the starstone otter.[3]
  • Live glowworms are fed and used in lamps to see at night in some areas, as opposed to using fire.[14]
  • The sunstone pendant was scattered into various petals of different flowers, which had to be brought together to complete the pendant.[15]
  • Bubble coaches (tightly put together bubbles pulled by merhorses) are the best way to see the grass sea. They travel under the water.[16]
  • Heatstones, which are small stones the size of an egg, come from lava rivers in the Midwinter Mountains. They absorb heat from these rivers and stay hot for months or years, until miners throw them back in again. They can be carried wrapped in cloth for warmth in pockets, or can be used unwrapped for cooking. [17]
  • Horse snowshoes exist. They are bent wooden sticks tied together at the edges with an x shaped crosspiece in the middle and leather straps. Horses can use them to walk on the snow.[18]
  • The sunstone was corrupted by wolf rider magic. Before it could reveal the location of the lost herd, Emma had to defeat this evil with her mind by calling on "The Sisterhood of the Storm," which is the voices of all the Valkyries singing together, their greatest form of magic.[19]

Plants

  • There is a magical healing flower called a haleflower that grows in North of North. It can be made into a paste that almost instantly heals any wound.[20]
  • Everspring pines have rainbow pinecones and can melt the snow around them, creating a mini spring! They grow best on the west side of the Midwinter Mountains.[21]
  • Planting things (ie. flowers, trees, vegetables, etc.) brings magic back to North of North.[22]
  • There is a type of magic known as "The Greenroads" in North of North. All living things give off magical energy, but plants stay in one place, so their energy eventually links together and the links form a pattern of connecting lines. Those are the Greenroads. Anyone good with plant magic can sense the strongest Greenroads, like the ones that connect big forests.[23]
  • Purple beans can be used to grow magic beanstalks.[24]
  • Horses of North of North love nature and all plants in equal measure.[25]
  • The trees of the Emeraldian Wilds are use to playing with dryads.[7]
  • According to Emma, flower magic is fine but graceful.[7]

Events

  • At certain times in the winter, although rarely, the Aurora Borealis may produce Auroborus Ice Storms. When this happens, it produces huge ice storms with magical hail, thunder and magical colored lightning in various rainbow colors. These storms are valuable, because they produce a type of precious, clear gem called an "Ice Gem". Because of their rarity, they are very valuable.[26]
  • During the Winter Festival, Herd Elemyn and the festival fairies used to decorate Trails End with sparkly ornaments each Midwinter's Eve. However, after the great Valkyrie leader Sigga left, this stopped until the return of Emma.[5]
  • Most humans in North of North participate in a Coming of Age Ceremony that takes place when one is 13 years old. This marks the beginning of adulthood and is when a person chooses their craft they will study for the next 5 years.[27]
  • The horses of the Wild Ride, or wild ride steeds, appear every seventh summer to take chosen kids on a wilderness adventure.[28]
  • There is a holiday in Trail's End called "Royalty Day", in which school children in Trail’s End dress up like royalty and have a parade, then visit the castle.[29]

World

  • Growdust brings Spring to North of North. Deru and Twig get all their magic from this miraculous event. Without it, it would also stay winter forever.[30]
  • North of North is connected to Earth through the Northern Lights, which serve as a sort of bridge that special magical horses can travel.[31]
  • Before Emma, not everyone believed all North of North legends were true. In fact, many citizens of North of North did not even believe in the legendary steeds![32]
  • The Aurora Borealis can be seen nightly from most parts of North of North.[33]
  • Horses who die on Earth come to live in North of North, for example, Dowager.[34]
  • Every living creature in North of North has its own magical aura, a colorful glow that surrounds it. This connection between all living things is the real magic in North of North.[35]
  • Fairy walls are walls of plants grown by fairies to protect their realm. They can be opened by only fairies or dryads. There are also fairy patrols that protect the fairy realm, and these guards will blind people for entering the fairy realm without permission.[36]
  • Baby fairies are made in small magical eggs that hang on trees.[37]
  • Some fairies use wands to conduct their magic, but not all. They can also use pollen to put people into a trance.[38]
  • According to Deru, things are exactly as they appear in North of North. No more, no less.[39]
  • Emma states that days are extremely long in North of North.[40]
  • Even though, the horses don't talk with words they use a technique called Horse-sharing that allows them to share mental images of anything with anyone they choose.[41]
  • The Travelers are a tight-knit band of wandering craftsfolk and traders.[42]
  • The horses in North of North, have longer lifespans and extremely smart.[41]
