Trivia

Original concept art

The design prompt for Cha Ye was "Chinese horses." While researching, John Shroades found a cave painting from the Lascaux Cave Complex known as "The Chinese Horse" for its similarity to Sung Chinese horse paintings. Shroades originally drafted a design based on this painting, but the design was rejected for its unrealistic proportions, and the current, realistically proportioned horse was drafted instead.[4]

I researched Chinese horses and found the cave painting in Lascaux known as the Chinese horse . It seemed like a unique approach to this card art so I tried a stylized version. They decided they didn't want the horse bodies changed from natural horse proportions, but liked the idea so we kept the color pattern but made it normal horse proportions. I still like the cave painting inspired version so I put it on my website."
