The Name Game

“The tribe this steed is based on is located in the high plains of Nebraska and South Dakota. They are the westernmost branch of the great Sioux nation. Their word for horse is šųká-wakhą́, which means “dog of power/mystery/wonder.”

A notable Lakota was Chief Sitting Bull, who played a role in the Battle of Little Bighorn, and worked as a performer in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Another notable Lakota was Chief Crazy Horse, who played a significant role during the Sioux War with the United States in 1876-77.

The Lakota Sioux (also known as the “Tetons”) were part of the buffalo culture, which involved living in temporary camps, following the herds of bison that they used for food and a variety of raw materials for clothing and tools.

The Lakota fought encroachment on their homeland, and contact with European settlers became violent after the discovery of gold, and prospectors invaded their holiest land, the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Lakota practiced the Sun Dance religion. Today the Lakota tribe owns the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, the 8th largest reservation in the United States, which was the site of militant protests during the 1970s.”[3]
